Watch the sand fall — a visual countdown with falling grains

What the Hourglass Timer Does

An hourglass timer is a countdown that you can feel. Instead of watching numbers tick down, you watch sand drain from the top bulb through a narrow neck into the bottom — individual grains falling and piling up. It gives time a weight and a rhythm that a plain digital countdown cannot match.

This hourglass runs entirely in your browser with no app to install and no account to create. Pick a preset or type a custom duration, press Start, and the sand begins to flow. When the countdown reaches zero, three audio beeps play instantly. The hourglass frame pulses red so you can spot it from across the room even with sound off.

Your data never leaves your browser. The only thing stored is your last-used duration in localStorage.

How It Works

  1. Choose a duration. Pick one of the six presets — 1 min, 3 min, 5 min, 10 min, 15 min, or 25 min — or click the time display and type hours, minutes, and seconds directly. Presets are tuned for focused sessions, the same range where real sand timers live.

  2. Press Start. Sand fills the top bulb and begins flowing through the neck. Individual grains fall and pile up at the bottom. A monospaced time display below the hourglass counts down in real time.

  3. Watch the sand move. The sand levels drain and fill smoothly while individual particle grains fall through the neck with gentle randomization, bouncing off the glass walls as they settle.

  4. Hear the alert. When the countdown reaches zero, the alarm sound plays and the hourglass frame turns red and pulses. Choose from four sounds — Bowl, Windchime, Gong, or Harp — to match your mood.

  5. Flip or start fresh. Press Flip to rotate the hourglass and run the same duration again — no re-entry needed. Press New Timer to clear everything and choose a different duration.

  6. Go fullscreen. Press F or click the fullscreen button to fill your screen with the hourglass. Great for presentations, meditation, or desk-toy mode.

Why Use Our Hourglass Timer

Most online timers are functional but forgettable — a ring that drains or a number that ticks. The hourglass brings the calm, physical energy of a real sand timer to your screen, with particle grains that fall and settle like the real thing.

The Flip feature mirrors real hourglass behavior — turn it over and go again, no menus or re-entry. And because it uses requestAnimationFrame for timing, the countdown stays accurate even during long sessions.

Keyboard shortcuts let you control everything without touching your mouse: Space to start or pause, R to reset, F for fullscreen.

Use Cases

  • Pomodoro focus sessions — Load the 25-minute preset and let the grains fall while you work. When the frame pulses red, your session is done.

  • Meditation and breathwork — Fullscreen turns the hourglass into a quiet desk companion. The gentle sand animation rewards sustained attention.

  • Classroom timers — Teachers can project the hourglass on a screen. Kids understand sand draining intuitively — no explanation needed.

  • Cooking and steeping — The 3-minute and 5-minute presets are perfect for tea, soft-boiled eggs, or resting meat. Flip to run the same time again.

  • Meeting time-boxes — Set a timer for each agenda item. The visual sand gives everyone a shared sense of pacing without anyone having to check the clock.

  • Study intervals — Alternate between focused study and break timers. The Flip feature makes cycling between intervals fast.

Tips and Best Practices

  • Use Flip for repeated intervals. If you are cycling between work and break periods, Flip saves the overhead of re-selecting a duration every time.

  • The red pulse is your muted-device fallback. Even with sound off, the pulsing red frame is visible from across the room. No need to keep checking back.

  • Keyboard shortcuts work in every state. Space always does the most logical thing: Start when ready, Pause when running, Resume when paused, Flip when done. You never need to remember which button to click.

  • Your duration persists between visits. The last custom time you entered is saved to localStorage. Come back tomorrow and it is already filled in.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I set a duration?
Click any preset button (1m, 3m, 5m, 10m, 15m, or 25m) to load that duration instantly. For a custom time, click the hours, minutes, or seconds fields in the time display and type your values directly. The hourglass fills with sand and is ready to start.
What does "Flip" do when the timer finishes?
Flip rotates the hourglass 180 degrees and immediately starts the same duration again — just like flipping a real sand timer. No need to re-select a preset or re-enter a time. If you want a different duration, press New Timer instead.
Can I use keyboard shortcuts?
Yes. Space starts, pauses, resumes, or flips depending on the timer state. R resets, clears, or starts a new timer. F toggles fullscreen. Shortcuts work whenever a text field is not focused.
Does this tool track or upload my data?
No. Everything runs entirely in your browser. The only data stored is your last-used duration, saved to localStorage. Nothing is sent to any server.
What are the falling grains?
While the timer runs, individual sand grains fall through the neck of the hourglass and pile up at the bottom. This particle animation runs on Canvas 2D alongside the smooth sand fill, giving the hourglass a realistic, physical feel.
What browsers support the hourglass animation?
Any modern browser that supports SVG and Canvas 2D — Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, and their mobile versions.
