Free Unit Converter Online
Convert length, weight, temperature, volume, and more โ instantly as you type
What the Unit Converter Does
Whether you are converting recipe measurements in the kitchen, checking luggage weight limits before a flight, or figuring out how many gigabytes that download will actually take, unit conversions come up more often than most people expect. Our Unit Converter handles 51 units across 7 categories โ Length, Weight, Temperature, Volume, Area, Speed, and Data Storage โ and delivers results instantly as you type. There is no waiting for a server response, no form to submit, and no page reload.
The tool is built for anyone who needs a quick, reliable answer: students working through physics homework, home cooks scaling recipes between metric and imperial, developers estimating file sizes, travelers converting between miles and kilometers, and professionals in fields where precision matters. Every calculation runs entirely in your browser. Your values are never transmitted to a server, never logged, and never stored after you close the page. There is no account to create and nothing to install.
How It Works
Getting a conversion takes just three steps:
-
Choose a category. Tap one of the seven category tabs at the top of the tool โ Length, Weight, Temp, Volume, Area, Speed, or Data. Each tab displays an icon, and on wider screens you will see the category name alongside it.
-
Select your units. Two dropdown menus labeled From and To let you pick the source and target units. Each dropdown shows the full unit name along with its abbreviation, so there is no guessing whether โozโ means fluid ounces or weight ounces. When you switch categories, the dropdowns automatically reset to the two most common units in that category.
-
Type your value. Enter a number in the input field next to the From dropdown. The converted result appears immediately in the output area next to the To dropdown, highlighted in green for easy reading. There is no convert button to press โ results update with every keystroke.
Below the conversion, a summary bar displays the full equation (for example, โ100 cm = 39.3701 inโ) along with a Copy button that places the complete conversion text on your clipboard and a Clear button that resets the input. The swap button between the From and To rows flips the conversion direction with a single tap, so you can go from centimeters-to-inches to inches-to-centimeters without touching the dropdowns.
Above the converter, a row of Popular Conversions shortcuts โ cm to in, kg to lbs, Fahrenheit to Celsius, miles to km, oz to mL, and ft to m โ lets you jump straight to the most common conversions with one click. Tapping a shortcut automatically sets the correct category and units. If you already have a value entered, it carries over so you can see the new conversion right away.
When the Temperature category is active, a Formulas reference panel appears beneath the converter showing the exact equations used: Celsius to Fahrenheit, Fahrenheit to Celsius, and Celsius to Kelvin.
Why Use Our Unit Converter
No server round-trips. Every conversion is calculated locally in your browser using precise mathematical constants and formulas. The result appears the moment you finish typing โ there is no network latency involved.
Scientific-grade accuracy. Length, weight, volume, area, speed, and data storage conversions use exact multiplication factors, the same constants found in engineering reference tables. Temperature conversions use the standard formulas (subtract 32 and multiply by 5/9 for Fahrenheit to Celsius, add 273.15 for Celsius to Kelvin) rather than rounded approximations. Results display up to 6 significant digits, and extremely large or small values switch automatically to scientific notation so nothing gets lost to rounding.
Binary data storage. Data conversions use the binary standard where 1 KB equals 1,024 bytes, 1 MB equals 1,048,576 bytes, and so on up through petabytes. This matches how operating systems and storage devices actually report capacity, not the marketing-friendly SI decimal convention.
No sign-up, no limits, no ads gating features. Use the converter as many times as you want. There are no daily caps, no premium tier hiding certain categories, and no pop-up asking for your email before showing results.
Mobile-first design. Large tap targets, responsive layout, and a grid of category tabs that adapts from four columns on phones to seven on desktops. The entire tool works with one hand on a phone screen.
Use Cases
Cooking and baking. The Volume category includes cups, tablespoons, teaspoons, fluid ounces, pints, quarts, and both US and UK gallons โ every measurement you encounter in a recipe. Converting 350 mL of broth into cups or scaling a British recipeโs imperial gallons to US gallons takes a single entry.
Travel planning. Quickly check distances in miles versus kilometers, temperatures in Fahrenheit versus Celsius, or weights in pounds versus kilograms. Knowing that your 23 kg luggage limit is about 50.7 lbs can save you a surprise at the airport check-in counter.
Fitness and health. Convert body weight between kilograms, pounds, and stones. Pair it with the height conversions in the Length category (feet and inches to centimeters) when filling out forms or tracking progress in a different measurement system than the one you grew up with.
Software development. The Data Storage category covers bits through petabytes using binary (1024-based) factors. Estimate how many megabytes a batch of images will consume, or verify that a 4.7 GB DVD can hold your 4,700 MB project folder (it cannot โ binary math means 4,700 MB is roughly 4.59 GB).
Academic work. Students in physics, chemistry, and engineering regularly convert between metric and imperial units, or between everyday and SI-standard units like meters per second and kilometers per hour. The Speed category also includes knots and Mach for aerospace and nautical coursework.
Real estate and land measurement. The Area category handles square feet, square meters, acres, hectares, square miles, and square kilometers. Compare international property listings or convert a plot size from hectares to acres when evaluating land.
Tips and Best Practices
Use the shortcuts for repeat conversions. If you find yourself converting Fahrenheit to Celsius regularly, tap that shortcut once and then just keep changing the input value. The category and units stay locked in until you switch.
Swap instead of reselecting. After converting kilograms to pounds, hit the swap button to instantly reverse the direction. This is faster than manually changing both dropdowns and avoids accidentally picking the wrong unit.
Copy the full equation. The Copy button grabs the complete conversion string โ value, source unit, equals sign, result, and target unit โ rather than just the number. This is useful for pasting into emails, spreadsheets, or chat messages where the context matters.
Watch for US vs. UK gallons. The Volume category distinguishes between US gallons (3.785 liters) and UK gallons (4.546 liters). If a recipe or specification does not say which, US is the safer assumption for American sources, and UK for British ones.
Check the formula panel for temperature. Temperature is the one category that does not use simple multiplication. If you want to understand the math behind the conversion or verify a result by hand, the formula reference panel that appears below the converter when Temperature is selected shows exactly how each calculation works.
Frequently Asked Questions
- How do I convert centimeters to inches?
- Enter your value in the length category with centimeters selected as the source unit and inches as the target. The result appears instantly as you type. For quick reference, 1 centimeter equals 0.3937 inches โ or just divide by 2.54.
- What is the difference between Celsius and Fahrenheit?
- Celsius and Fahrenheit are two temperature scales. Water freezes at 0 C (32 F) and boils at 100 C (212 F). To convert Fahrenheit to Celsius, subtract 32 and multiply by 5/9. Our converter does this math for you in real time.
- How many kilograms are in a pound?
- One pound equals approximately 0.4536 kilograms. Conversely, one kilogram equals about 2.2046 pounds. Select the weight category and type any value to see the conversion instantly.
- Is this unit converter accurate?
- Yes. All conversions use precise mathematical constants and formulas โ the same values used in scientific and engineering calculations. Results are displayed to 4 decimal places by default. Temperature conversions use exact formulas, not approximations.
- Does the unit converter work on my phone?
- Absolutely. The converter is designed mobile-first with large touch targets and a responsive layout. Switch categories with a single tap, use popular shortcuts for common conversions, and see results instantly as you type. No app download needed.
- Can I convert cooking measurements?
- Yes. The volume category includes cups, tablespoons, teaspoons, fluid ounces, and milliliters โ the units you need most in the kitchen. Select volume, pick your source and target units, and type your measurement.
